I think the sharing thing is great...I wish there was more of it. Still kinda new here but would love to hear more of everyone's playing...

On the Digidesign user conference (DUC) they have a thread where people post their mixes for others to listen/evaluate/enjoy. Maybe we could do that here? Just an idea...

One of these days I'll post something...I almost think it's unfair to critique or comment without having a sample of one's own playing for others to listen to. That way you'll know how much weight to give their comments or criticisms when they give them. For instance, if Erskoman makes a comment, everyone listens...not to say that anyone else wouldn't have anything constructive to offer, but...

There were some serious brain farts in a couple of the Altered clips I posted a month or so ago but I can't let that stop me from sharing stuff. I'm not a perfectionist I guess. I defintiely have high standards though.

You know, the presentation on the old Weckl DCI tapes is so near perfect in a sense that there's no mistakes, and the production is great. It was then weird seeing Dave in the John Patitucci tape when the audio was more raw. Made his playing seem more human... more reachable I guess. The mystery is gone from a lot of that stuff now, but his current state of playing is even more unrecahable than it was back then. Not that I want to play like him but I do like his soloing style.

Yea, for stuff like a playalong, as long as there is some vibe, I don't have a problem posting it. Started playing the drums in 1990 (after figuring out how to play beats by listening to And Justice for All by Metallica). The first time I tried to play Spur, it was like: fuggedaboutit!

Because I can't practice a solo like Spur for more than 20 minutes at a time, I'd do something else and come back to it another time, and it's that much easier.

Just because your soloing doesnt mean you cant convey a pulse of some kind. 99% of the time I solo my hat is splashing the quarter note for this reason. Not to mention the phrases themselves can spell out the time. They don't all have to be "out". The listener needs something to latch on to...not to mention the other guys in the band.

DW is king at this. Even when he "takes it out" with some of those more advanced synchopated phrasings, if you clap/tap along & listen hard enough, you can [usually, if not] always "hear" the underlying 1/4 [& 1/8th] note pulse underneath. [Sometimes it takes "a few yrs" of listening, study, practice, & playing when you listen to guys like DW, VC, & Virg really take it out!] [img]tongue.gif[/img]

But, attention to the time, pocket, groove is paramount above all else AOT the chops or playing the licks. If it's not played within the context of the pocket, it is not going to hold any weight. Something i've always tried to work on, [once the realization hit me many moons ago, "no thanks" to guys like Weckl ;c)]

Actually, Dave's and several other sites are running off software I developed.

Anybody who has doubts about my ability to groove can go back and check out my version of the Oakland Stroke or this bass drum heavy groove. Within 3 months (when I no longer have to sight read Spur to get through it) I could have this solo locked to the click if I wanted to. Although, I'm also practicing superimposing 7,5,11 beats over 4, and the original 1/4 becomes less obvious (even if you tap your foot).

Dazzler now has the music (probably been playing drums a lot longer than I have)...let's see what you can do...
